1966 Ford Mustang 289 302 Spark Plug Wire Separator Installation
- Taylor wire loom separators-
We decided to switch the shop mustang spark plug wires back to stock style wires, we were previously running Taylor brand wires with the HEI pertronix system. part # D1350
The stock system looks better, functions well and keeps with overall theme of the mustang- modified stock .
There are many options out there, we found these Taylor separators to be cost effective, efficient and easy to install.
All applications are different, one size almost never fits all . We did run into a little trouble with the supplied hard ware, the bolts used to mount the wire loom separator brackets were too short to fit with these style aluminum ford racing valve covers (1980-90's ford 302)
Installation was easy 30 min or so, we also decided to buy a two mixed sets of cheep black plastic wire separators,
these work great to keep the wires in line and looking nice and tight near the distributor cap.
As I said earlier we decided to go with stock wires from Napa , part# MPW2801
One issue to consider...stock wires come in pre cut sizes, this is great when your running a stock look 289-302 ,and if you don't mind your wires draped all over your engine like left over spaghetti. The pre cut stock wires are actually an issue with these style wire separators. unfortunately, the passenger side head where the spark plugs point toward the rear of the engine bay barely have enough length to fit, which makes the wires look visually different than the driver side and over time could cause premature failure from being pulled tightly. Also advancing or retarding the timing with tight wires can become an issue, as you want to have enough wire slack to properly set the timing, ideally about 3/4" of slack in the wires.
In general when deciding on custom wire loom separators we recommend purchasing custom wires that can be cut to length for the perfect fit. If that's not your style just go ahead and purchase another set of the same stock wires, rob the longest ones out of the new set and switch with the shorter length wires.
